The Psammotherapy Center in Lignano Riviera, designed between 1962 and 1963 by Daniele Calabi and Gino Valle, stands as a prime example of how architecture can meet the functional and environmental needs of its time. Located at Lungomare Riccardo Riva, 1, this thermal complex represents an intriguing dialogue between pure geometric forms and adaptation to the unique characteristics of the natural landscape.

The design of the Psammotherapy Center is characterized by a clear organization of spaces and volumes, reflecting a modern and rational vision. The buildings are distinguished by their specific functions: separate pavilions for male and female treatments, as well as distinct areas for the calidarium and tepidarium, each designed to cater to the different needs of visitors. This functional division is achieved through a composition of architectural nuclei that harmoniously integrate with the terrain, following the soft lines of the sand dunes that define the coastal landscape.

Calabi and Valle’s project is notable for its use of a well-defined geometric module, based on a 120x120 cm grid, which imparts order and coherence to the entire complex. This module is not only a structural element but also a visual guide that permeates both the floor plan and the facades of the buildings. The regular grid facilitates a clear and systematic composition, making the architecture functional and intuitive for users.

An interesting aspect of the Psammotherapy Center is the separation between thermal functions and those related to dining and hospitality. The bar and restaurant, located at the entrance of the complex, were exclusively designed by Gino Valle and are not part of the joint design by Calabi and Valle for the thermal facilities. This choice emphasizes a clear distinction between wellness experiences and service areas, reflecting a functionalist approach that permeates the entire project.

Overall, the Psammotherapy Center in Lignano Riviera is a masterpiece of rationalist architecture, combining aesthetics and functionality in a unique landscape context. The design by Calabi and Valle, through modular structure and careful planning, provides a significant example of how architecture can elegantly integrate with the natural environment while meeting users' needs.

Lignano and the Race to the Sea in the 1960s (1960-1969)

In the 1960s, the transformation of the territory for tourism purposes consolidated with plans for Lignano Sabbiadoro, Pineta, and Riviera. During the economic boom, the number of beds and visitor numbers tripled in ten years. However, urbanistic responses varied significantly between the different areas. D'Olivo's projects for Pineta and Piccinato's for Riviera contrasted with speculative degradation, while the "race to the sea" led to the spoiling of the coastlines, highlighting the contrast between tourist development and sustainable planning.
