Experience Description

Journey Through Vacation Architecture in the City of Holidays

BikeandGo, in collaboration with the non-profit cultural association "Raggi e ArchiTetture - Ville di Lignano," has organized this splendid tour of historic villas!

This bike itinerary will take you to admire contemporary or recent art forms that have made the beach resort of Lignano Pineta beautiful and famous. Created in the 1950s as an exclusive vacation destination for wealthy tourists seeking peace and privacy in the pine forest, Lignano Pineta is home to some of the most interesting examples of 20th-century architecture.

You will explore 20th-century architectures in Lignano created by architects from the IUAV - Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia - and other professionals associated with this style, whose works are of great interest and serve as a reference for future generations. Indeed, some of these architects' theses were projects for seaside houses.

The villas are often situated at different elevations due to the sand dunes and are nestled in the pine forest, such as Villa Paiani by Paolo Pascolo (1956-57) or Casa Christoff by Gianni Avon (1956-57). Others reflect different architectural styles, like Villa Sordi (1958) by Aldo Bernardis, where architecture and nature are perfectly balanced.

In the late 20th century, the use of prefabricated concrete panels was experimented with in some buildings, like the "train" and Villa Sinisgalli (1954-1955), both by Marcello d'Olivo. Modern architecture is represented by Claudio Nardi with the Sbaiz villas (1994-2000). These projects collectively represent a valuable heritage that deserves respect and appreciation.
